New Cartoon: So Long Rick

So it's lights out for Rick Santorum, and many of his following, the far right leaning crowd, the appointed "conservatives", are groaning that it appears inevitable Mitt Romney will become the party's nominee. Many are comparing this year's playout in the election as being similar to that of 2008 when John McCain's bid held little enthusiasm from the same pack.
For the conservative demographic of the Republican party, Romney leaves much to be desired. The whole Romneycare association, the flip-flopping, the say what I will to get elected, all leave a bad taste in the mouths of some. So the question now is "will they or won't they vote for Mitt?".
One line of thinking is the obvious, "Anybody but Obama" sentiment. But another, especially among Evangelicals is "I won't vote for a Non-Christian" as many Evangelicals denote Romney and his adherence to his "Mormon" faith. Ironic that many "non-believers" decry a separation of church and state, feeling it thrust upon them, and yet some "believers" also struggle to grant Romney a collective free pursuit of his political and religious choosing. It's not so much the different faith, as the White House has hosted President's of all faiths, but how different from that of their own. The greater the difference the greater the fervor.
So now the plot thickens to see which of all these subplots will prove to be most prevailing. Perhaps they all will. When the ballots are cast will it be "Anyone but Obama"? Will it be "I'm not voting for a Mormon"? Time will tell. But we're closer than ever to the answers, starting this morning.

Sometimes I would rather hear the crickets than all the media racket. Then of course the crickets can provide a little racket of their own. But at least they don't normally affect your government, health care, or life expectancy.

Gingrich: "Reagan Republican", Or "The Anti-Obama?"

Newt Gingrich. Politician. Former Speaker of the House. Two time Two-Timer. Reagan Republican. At least HE claims that. Others dispute it. And a firestorm from the Reagan Republican questioners has arisen in recent days as Newt's South Carolina momentum is in danger of being just a good memory for the Republican candidate.
But chief of all titles may just be The Anti-Obama. Something Newt can hang his hat on. And it may be a case of the right man at the right time. This year brings the Republican base relishing a long awaited sparring with President Obama. Some have visions of Gingrich dealing blow after blow in the Presidential Debates with Obama. How they'd like to banish Obama from Pennsylvania Avenue. And if there's anything left of Romney or Gingrich when the campaign dust clouds settle, Republican faithful hope to overturn the 2008 candidate of Hope and Change. The stinging irony of that campaign motto has left many Americans longing for the economic prosperity that preceded him.
"Anyone but Obama", is the cry heard from the right. But staunch Social Conservatives must grapple with promoting a historical adulterer, or a former Pro-Choice candidate while proffering their requisite brand of Christian forgiveness. Can they back Gingrich should he get the nod? Or Mitt? It appears that the Obama vitriol is reason enough to back either. For this brand of Republicans it's Newt or Mitt or Rick or Ron. Does it really matter? An Obama TKO is the coveted prize for whoever's wearing the gloves when the bell rings later this year.
Reagan Republican. Attractive to some circles, but only as attractive as Newt's viability to defeat Obama. It's all about Obama. For or against him, he's the center of focus. Which does much to stroke his Presidential ego. This fashion's going to be around for a while. At least in 2012.

It's hard not to be cynical of a number of politicians on both sides of the aisle. Sure there is one story after another of those who sacrifice to serve our country in this way, and there are many who seem valiant in their quest to turn Washington on it's head and get things done. Time and again it seems futile to affect any revolutionary changes in Congress or the White House, or even make minimal impact across party lines. It's hard for many Americans to see pass the shenanigans that occur regularly between the parties. Perhaps that is why Congress' current job approval rating is in the low double digits- like in the teens primarily by most polls.
What legislation is good for the country, as seen by many Americans, is relegated to a lower priority, beneath that of the legislative party priorities. With the Republicans playing the role of shot blocker now, the Democrats are finding it hard to make many shots, and certainly not some of the layups they had through Obama's first two years in the Presidency. There doesn't seem to be a lot of good offense to be found, mostly just a hypnotizing bore of legislative defense.
Perhaps when we see more evidence for it, we will see our President and representatives not as gamers for their own political playbook, but the duly elected officials we have placed to fight for meaningful victories for our Country.

Cartoon: Is Newt Gingrich Really "The One"?
Cartoon: Is He "The One" ?Is Newt Gingrich just a temp? Another flash in the pan GOP contender here today gone tomorrow? Time will tell, but current indications are this horse race could be up for grabs with Gingrich, Romney, and now even Paul making a strong charge toward the Iowa Caucus January 3rd, 2012. Even this week of Christmas is a firebox of activity by many candidates (see http://caucuses.desmoinesregister.com/2011/12/19/iowa-caucus-week-dec-18-24-notes-from-the-campaigns/ for individual candidates plans for the week).
According to www.atlanticwire.com today, there are indications that Gingrich may not be the last man standing in Iowa come January.
"A new poll from Public Policy Polling shows that Ron Paul has taken the lead in the Iowa caucus race, while Newt Gingrich's support is fading fast. A different Gallup poll shows Gringrich still holding the lead, but slipping, while The New York Times has Paul in the lead as well.
Gingrich has seen his numbers in the PPP poll drop from 27 percent to 14 percent in just three weeks, while his favorability rating is now split at 46 percent for to 47 percent against, the worst of any candidate not named Jon Huntsman. That's quite a fall for someone who looked to be running away with the state and taking charge on the national level."
Should be an interesting encore to the holiday activities this year!

My Favorite Things: Mitt's Hair, Newt's Responses, Obama's Exit (2013)

As we're screaming toward 2012 and the time to choose candidates and choose sides, it will be fairly obvious that I'm not completely happy with the GOP choices. That's nothing new for recent years actually. But each candidate does have his strong points. So I focused on Mitt's hair and Newt's responses. T.I.C. yes, but where policies are concerned, I was trying to build on some thing constructive, rather than focus on the flip flopping of Mitt or the whining and infidelity of Newt (those things are in the personal arena for many people).
I suppose for those like myself who are far from enamored by the President, if he does take an exit in 2013, I will be feeling better in spite of the GOP shortcomings. Then "I won't feel so bad". But as powerful as one man being the President may be, the troubles of today can't be laid solely at his feet. He had a ready contingent to assist. I'll just choose to focus on my favorite things and not get into the more unsavory realities.

Another Slogan for Obama (Cartoon)

Here we are again. The unveiling of a new slogan. "We Can't Wait". Before that, "Hope and Change", "Yes We Can", "Change We Can Believe In", among others. The often touted master campaigner, the campaign chameleon, President Obama has launched into a new phase. It seems to be a unilateral mission to change what he can- on his own now. Without the shackles of Congress to constrain him, now against him rather than for him in his first two years, the President appears to be on a mission to save America here and now. Or later. Whenever.
Anything that helps in the re-election effort actually. Can't pay for the mortgage? Nor the student loan? He's the deliverer. If you don't mind big government stepping in and transferring American tax payer dollars at large to benefit a segment of the population that finds itself struggling to meet their own private obligations. If you don't mind Big Brother teaching Americans there's always a way, if it's Obama's way.
But people really need the help! (And Obama really needs the votes). Some will say he's stymied by the conservative right who can't seem to afford him the resources to move forward with more government intervention on behalf of needy Americans. If Obama can't solve the problem, maybe money will. Yet again.
And so the political divide widens. America, built on individualism and capitalism, matched against the murmuring masses of Occupy Everywhere. Can Obama really do it or is "Yes We Can" merely a slogan of the past.? A promise that is past? Time will tell, but for now, let's get the Pumpkin cans out and deal with something real world.
